Columbia University is a private research university in Manhattan, New York City, USA, and a member of the Ivy League. Columbia University was founded in 1754 under the name King’s College by royal charter of King George II of England, making it one of the only three universities in the United States established under such authority. It is the highest-ranking educational institution in New York and the fifth oldest university in the United States.
Butler Library is the largest library at Columbia University, housing two million books and materials, including collections on the humanities, with particular strengths in history (government documents and social science publications before 1974), literature, philosophy, and religion. The most extensive collection is in the study of ancient Greece.
