What to Consider When Studying High School in the U.S.?

The United States is a superpower with an advanced education system and an ideal learning and development environment, making it a top choice for students worldwide on their journey of knowledge. However, before stepping into the learning environment in the land of the free, there are a few things you need to consider to make your study abroad experience as perfect as possible.

Research Visa requirements carefully
If you wish to study at U.S. high schools, Vietnamese students will need to familiarize themselves with the types of visas required for high school students. Typically, international students will need an F-1 Visa if they plan to live and study in the U.S. for more than one year. The F-1 Visa allows students to study and earn a high school diploma at both public and private high schools in the U.S. However, if choosing to study at a public high school, students can only study there for up to one year, must pay full tuition for the duration of their studies, and then transfer to a private school if they wish to continue their education.

Thoroughly research schools
Given the vastness of the U.S. high school system, choosing the right school is no easy task. When researching schools in the U.S., students need to carefully consider the quality of the school, location, support services for international students, living conditions, transportation, and more. This is a crucial step that cannot be overlooked. Public high schools in the U.S. typically have moderate tuition fees, costing about half to two-thirds as much as private schools. On the other hand, private high schools in the U.S., although more expensive, offer many outstanding advantages and are known for producing students with excellent academic records, who often get accepted into top U.S. universities with high-value scholarships.

Prepare your application carefully
International students entering with an F-1 visa must prepare all the necessary documents to enroll in U.S. high schools. Besides the application for admission, international students must also meet other requirements such as health checks, writing a personal statement, participating in an English proficiency interview, etc.
Therefore, being well-prepared with all the required documents and paperwork is extremely important, as a complete application is a significant plus in the eyes of the school’s admissions committee, while also providing confidence and peace of mind for the student themselves.
