Study in Canada Without SAT

When exploring study abroad options in developed countries, students often hear about the SAT certificate and wonder what the SAT is and how it is used. Is the SAT required for studying in Canada? NEEC will answer these questions in this topic: IS SAT REQUIRED FOR STUDYING IN CANADA?

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is one of the standard educational certificates required for students to apply to many universities in the US, especially those with high national rankings. The exam is managed and administered by the College Board, a non-profit organization in the US, and developed by ETS – Educational Testing Service.

This is an important certificate to assess students’ knowledge in natural and social sciences, and the SAT certificate is valid for 5 years. There are two types of SAT exams as follows:

  • SAT 1 (SAT Reasoning): consists of 10 sections, including 9 scoring sections divided equally into 3 main parts: Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. The remaining section is unscored and is used to standardize the SAT test. It is not identified beforehand and could be in any of the 3 main parts. Score range: 200 – 800 per section. The total score is 1600 points.
  • SAT II (SAT Subject Test): a separate test for each subject. Depending on the school and the program, you may be required to take 3 of the specified subjects. Score range: 200 – 800 per test. The total score range is 1600 points.

Although the SAT is managed and administered in the United States, its assessment quality is also recognized in countries with equivalent education systems like Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, etc.

So, our main question is, Is the SAT required for studying in Canada?

Universities in Canada typically require basic conditions such as good – excellent academic performance, an IELTS certificate, extracurricular activities, and past achievements (e.g., national/international math competition rankings). However, since Canada shares the North American region with the United States and has a similar education system, Vietnamese students who wish to apply to top-ranked universities in Canada, such as the top 10 schools, should consider having an SAT certificate as a required part of proving their academic abilities. This certificate provides universities with a concrete basis for accurate admission assessments and enhances the competitiveness of your application.

Admission requirements for Canadian universities:

  • High School Graduation: Minimum GPA of 6.5.
  • English Proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5, with no skill below 6.0/ TOEFL iBT 70 or above.

Thus, when choosing to study in Canada, students can consider the ranking of the university and the specific requirements of the school or their chosen program to prepare a complete application, including the SAT if necessary. If you are still unsure about which university to apply to, which major to choose, or whether to include the SAT, contact NEEC for more information and guidance.
