Vaccination Plan in Ontario, Canada

The province of Ontario (Canada) will begin a wide-scale Covid-19 vaccination rollout starting in April 2021, administering up to 150,000 doses per day. The specific plan of the Ontario Provincial Government is as follows:

  • Phase 1: From now until April 2021, Phase 1 prioritizes vaccinating frontline healthcare workers and elderly residents in long-term care homes. Additionally, vaccinations will be prioritized for Indigenous populations in the northern regions. In January, vaccines will be gradually delivered to Canada. In the first week of January, 50,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will arrive, followed by 80,000 doses weekly. Moderna vaccines will receive 50,000 doses tomorrow, with the second batch arriving in the first week of January. This vaccine will be prioritized for northern residents, as it does not require extremely cold storage, making it easier to transport to various regions within the province. By the end of March, 1.1 million people in Ontario will have been vaccinated.
  • Phase 2: April—July 2021 From April onward, widespread vaccination will be carried out. By June, Ontario is expected to receive 15 million vaccine doses, equivalent to 5 million doses per month. Hospitals and pharmacies will be able to administer vaccinations. Ontario has not yet specified the order of priority groups, but it is likely that people over 75 will be vaccinated first, followed by those aged 50-75. Priority groups may include farm workers, police officers, and teachers. During Phase 2, Ontario plans to vaccinate 8.5 million people out of a total population of 14.7 million, completing vaccinations for 60% of the population. (Note: To achieve herd immunity, 70% of the population needs to be vaccinated.)
  • Phase 3: From August onward In this phase, vaccination will become widespread and available at family doctor clinics or pharmacies. The Ontario government describes this phase as making Covid-19 vaccination as easy as getting a flu shot. This means that anyone, even non-residents of Ontario, can easily receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
